A Letter From Rain Tree

Dear all,

Hi, there! This is “Albizia saman”. You can call me Rain Tree.

I’m very tall!

Mm…I’m about 20 meters tall.

People said that my leaves and flower are beautiful.

Welcome to our school!

I can’t wait to meet you;)

Rain Tree XXX

The Rain Tree is our school tree. It was moved from the old campus.

At that time, it was a bare, bold and unspectacular tree.

Because our school was a farm before,

the soil here is very fertile.The tree is big and tall, now.

The reason that we preserve the tree is because it is a very rare species.

It opens it's flower buds in the morning,

and it'll drop down the dew from it's leaves,

and that's why it is called the " Rain Tree ".

The Rain Tree is a symbol of " Inheritance ".

Our school can be sustained,

and inherited for many generations.

Now, the rain tree is a very important part in our school.

You can see it in many activities.

At Christmas, there are some decorations on it.

It looks like a Christmas tree, it’s more beautiful than usual.

Last March, there was a big earthquake in Japan.

We hung many cards which we wrote to the Japanese under it.

Maybe the wishes can arrive Japan faster because its blessing.

And it’s very important in many students’ heart.

In a computer graphics competition, a student drew it, and got the good score.

The rain tree accompanies many students for their school life.

In our minds, it’s not only a tree, it’s also a friend.

Introduce Albizia saman (Rain Tree)

This is my introduce about Albizia saman.It have one in our school,and it is very important for our school.It have a special meaning for us(忠孝’s STUDENTS)You can also serch it on the net,than you can find many information.It is a very old tree I think. So you can find about the story of it. (I think you can enjoy in it)

About Albizia saman,

Stem: Rain Tree is a wide-canopied tree with a large symmetrical crown. It usually reaches a height of 25 m (82 ft) and a diameter of 40 m (130 ft).

Leaves: Bipinnate compound leaves alternate, 2~5 pairs of pinna;2~8 pairs of lobulars, Ovate-oblong or slightly round. Up to 4.5 cm. Smooth surface. But there is a lot of villus behind the leaves.

Flowers: Several lineages of this tree are available, e.g., with reddish pink and creamish golden colored flowers. Corolla length of 1.7 cm. 20 stamens, filaments slender.

Fruit: Pod flat, and smooth. Length of 15~20 cm, slightly cylindrical.

Albizia saman’s source area is the tropics Americas, the west indies. It can reaches a height of 20 meters. The leaves usually falling in winter. Its name in Taiwan is 雨树, so you also can call it “rain tree”. It is a flowering tree, it will bloom in spring. These trees need live with enough sunshine and water in its growth period. We usually grow rain tree in the garden, it is a kind of shade tree.

The leaves of Albizia saman would fold because of the temperature and illumination.

The leaves hold in rainy weather and in the evening. The angles of the folding leaves are also different in morning, afternoon and the evening. Why it have to do so?? Because it has to reduce the losing water to prevent lacking water.

It was planted in our old school site.
It was removed to where it is now when we built a new school and moved in. Our school made lots of effort to take care of it when it was first removed. It almost died then.

Today where the most common names are from has a lot to do with leaves. Rain trees come from tropical America. In the morning, pinnate lobules will open to photosynthesis, and close in the afternoon to redue evaporate. And these small leaves are very sensitive. On cloudy days, they will close as if it were dark. If it rains at this moment, the heavy canopy will allow the rain to run down to the ground quickly.

Not only the small leaves and the weather have so subtle echo.The pod of rain trees will affected by the ambient humidity and have bend down appearance.When the humidity is high at night,the pod of rain trees will bend down.Therefore,we can tell if it will rain by looking at the condition of rain trees.

Another name of trees is more profound and more meaningful in ecology.People in tropical places think the lawn under rain trees is protected from the sunlight,but it can enjoy the rain on rainy days.In contrast to the lawns around the rain trees,they are more thriving.But this argument is too simple because it is likely that the grass under the rain tree is different from that around the rain tree.

1.〈About Rain Tree〉/ by blogger wrier:

「……雨豆树，雨如豆下。虽然我还不知雨豆名称的由来，但我的解读是当冬天他的小叶转黄一一落下时，那情景就像是雨不停的飘下，这时若站在树下感受，也颇有浪漫之意。雨豆树是一种夜晚会睡觉的树，晚上你会看到他将叶子合起。……次日太阳出来时，他又将是一天的忙碌，展开笑靥替人们服务，随着太阳的日升日落而休息……。」

【The gist】
It means: he thinks that its name called ‘‘rain tree’’ is because he thinks when its leaves turn in yellow and fall in winter, they are like rain falling. It’ll be very romantic when you stand under the rain tree. And rain tree will sleep at night, you’ll see it closes its leaves. The next day, when the sun rises, it’ll be busy again. It provides services to the people with smiles and rests after the sun sets…...

2.〈雨豆树下的「负荷」〉/ by 吴晟

「……例如雨豆树，以及雨豆树下的上课情景。……在几棵大树下，助教开始介绍：这是雨豆树、含羞草科落叶大乔木，类似大叶合欢。和含羞草一样，夜晚叶片会闭合，……雨豆树是二回偶数羽状复叶，大叶互生，小叶对生；下雨之前，水气饱和的关系，叶片纷纷闭合起来，这是很有趣的生态现象，因此英文名称是rain tree。……。每当经过这些绿荫盎然的雨豆树，总会在脑海中浮现陪伴志宁上课时，在雨豆树下出神仰望的情景。」

【The gist】
It’s a story about the writer and his son. The writer memoried that one day they attended class under the rain tree. The teacher began to introduce the tree and also explaned why it called ‘‘rain tree’’.( All about rain tree ---- you can take a look at G2’s article.) After that, when the writer passes these trees every times, he would think of that time again when he attended class with his son, and they were spellbound as looking up the rain tree.

雨豆树 are very common in singapore. when you arrived at s'pore changi airport, the motorway that takes you into the city centre is largely lined with 雨豆树.

Shrove Tuesday, a new special day that I've never heard about before. But now I know why (Christian)people have pancakes that day.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash wednesday (第一天 of Lent). Pancakes are eaten 因为 they are made out of 糖, 面粉, 鸡蛋, these are things that we normally do not eat during Lent.

Lent is a time when Christians give up something for 四十天, prior to Easter, in order to empathise with 耶稣Jesus who was sent into the wilderness for 40 天 and 夜 when he was tempted by the Devil.

During Lent, 我不吃巧克力，也不吃甜品.

Lent is like the first and fifteenth days of the lunar calendar in Taiwan. Some people, usually Taoists(道教信徒), eat vegetarian food on the two days to show respect to Buddha. Buddhists have vegetarian foods only, but Taoists eat meat.

Do you know?

According to the New York Times, Americans waste approximately 27 percent of thefood available for consumption in the United States…about a pound per person per day. But there also lots of people dead from starvation.

Food in Taiwan is great.

We are lucky. Taiwan has many amazing mouthwatering cuisine.

We enjoy the buffet.

In fact,

More than £12 Billion in Food Waste Goes in the Garbage Every Year.

Zheng Yanji(鄭衍基), a famous chef in Taiwan.

He said,

”An outstanding chef should not waste our food.

you need to work on wasting less food!”

All You Can Eat

People in Taiwan like to go「all you can eat」restanrant because it's cheap.
But it's also wastes much food！
You can take lots of food but pay a little money.
Sometimes, you maybe get so much food because you think you can eat them all.
And after you leave, there is still food on your plates.
It might be really bad or remaining！
Our parents always tell us, never waste food！
But when we go「all you can eat」restanrant, we will forget that.
More and more people don't eat full in the world.
But people in Taiwan are still wasting food.
People in Taiwan wasted 2,750,000 tons last year！
It's a big numeral, isn't it？
Let's start to save food in our life！

WHAT'S FAMINE?

A famine is a widespread scarcity of food. This phenomenon is usually accompanied or followed by regional malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and increased mortality.
Emergency measures in relieving famine primarily include providing deficient micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, through fortified sachet powders or directly through supplements. The famine relief model increasingly used by aid groups calls for giving cash or cash vouchers to the hungry to pay local farmers instead of buying food from donor countries, often required by law, as it wastes money on transport costs, but more importantly, it perpetuates the cycle of dependency on foreign imports rather than helping to create real local stability through agricultural abundance. Such independence however does rest upon local conditions of soil, water, temperature and so on.

6.Everyone on the earth can have 340kg of food every year on the average, but the people in the developed countries can have 580kg of food every year on the average. Therefore, people in the developing country can have only 170kg of food every year on the average.
7.In 1995, American people wasted forty-three million and seven hundred thousand tons of food.
8. People in England dump four million apples, one million sausages and three million tomatoes every year, but it is just part of food wasting.

Dry salt and make it to crystallization

First, take some ocean water and put it on a plate made of red tile.

Next, sunshine the ocean water for a several days to make them into dry salt.

Then, people will rake the dry salt into a pile

DIY – Make a colourful salt bottle !!!

You need to get some salt and mix some colouring in it.

You will get some colourful salt.

Put the salt you made into a bottle.

! While you put salt in it you’ll need to knock it on the table to make it tight!

When you’re done, you will get a bottle of colourful salt.

Whales and dolphins

We went to Taijiang Cetacean Museum.

There’re many huge whales and dolphins.

G2 Our trip to Mangroves and the experience in Fishing Village.
On 10/22,we took a trip to 四草.That was very interesting trip. We all were very excited about it. And we learned a lot in our tour. Now we want to share with you. Are you enjoy about it?
-At Mangroves:We saw
1. 五梨跤:
Asiatic Mangrove
(1)They can reach up to 25 centimeters tall.
(2)Most of them are found in south Taiwan.
(3)Its bark is brown and gray, and its leaves are oval and green.
(4)Its flowers are white and its looks like a star.
(5)You can only see its flowers between July and September.
(6)Their roots are special because they have to hold the tree.

2.水笔仔Kandelia obovata: Scientific name→Nvcennia marina(Forsk.)Vierh
It is a very special plant,they most grow in north of Taiwan.They were grow from25° N to 25° S. The florescence period of this species is between May and July. As a kind of mangrove, they grow in saline (brackish) coastal habitats, and are mass planted in order to check winds, control sand and protect dikes.
3. 榄李:
Black Mangrove
(1)They can reach up to 10 meters tall.
(2)Most of them are found in Tainan.
(3)Its bark is brown, and its leaves are thick and green.
(4)Its flowers are white and they look like a star.
(5)You can only see its flowers between May and July.

4. 海茄苳:We didn’t saw them,because it is disappear in Taiwan now.
5.台湾海桐Fragrant Pittosporum:
(1)They grow in the Philippines, India, and Taiwan in Kaohsiung and the Hengchun peninsula and the island.
(2) Pittosporum plants are very distinctive with curled, wavy foliage.

The fishing village:

Now we want to tell about village. I wish you will have fun with it.

This traditional thing looked very interesting. The people lived in the fishing village then would put that in the water. And used them to catch fish. If you want to caught some fish, you need to pull the rope. And the rope would pull the net out of the water. And then you can caught the fish on the net.Are you feel very interesting? If you have chance you can try it. I think it will be fun=)

There were the plants we saw in 四草. We are so happy that we can tell you these information. If you have chance to come to Taiwan. Go to visit these things.I think you will fell worth=)When you finish looking this introduce. Are you excited about it?

There are one hundred kinds of oysters in the world. Most of them can eat. Oysters’ shells are very colorful, they are dark grey and a little bit purple, brown, black or yellow. They usually live in intertidal or the reef in the shallow.

Most oysters cultivate at the coastal of Chiayi, Tainan, Yunlin and Kinmen. The fishermen usually use (插竹式)Bamboo-style plug to feed the oysters. They usually put some empty shells in the ocean, and oysters’ embryos will attachment on the empty shells. And then it will become new oysters. The oysters like to stay in the water of 10~30℃. They usually eat plankton or organic debris for food.

I just live in Taiwan, so you won’t see me in other places. By the way, I live in mangrove, and I build my house in the little wet caves. Nice to meet you! :D

The celebration I found most creative and extraordinary is "Global Congratulations‧All Eyes @n Taiwan."

It's an international painting competition. 100 submissions by foreign nationals are selected and these paintings will be projected publicly on the wall of National Chiang-Kai-Shek Memorial Hall on the evenings of Octorber 10 and 11. The celebration usually starts with a raising of the Republic of China and a singing of our national anthem. The ceremony was also held in the Tainan City Hall, which is pretty near my house, but I am never an early bird and missed it this morning. Confucius advocated ''Benevolence'' and taught his students about ''Benevolence''. At Teacher's Day, Confucian temple usually propaganda Confucius to let people understand what Confucius advocated then. And people also can know why Confucius is a great teacher in everyone's mind.
2. "Some food for Confucius"
The staffs of Confucian temple always prepares some food for Confucius. (Every year they prepares different food for Confucius.) For example, some bowls of thick soup, some beans and some pastries.
3. "Some special show for Confucius"
Some good students dance "Bai-E Wu" (The Chinese word is 八佾舞) , "Read the poems" ,and "Hair of Wisdom" (The Chinese word is 智慧毛) for Confuciusan and addressed to him the highest respect.

※What is "Hair of Wisdom"?
It is the hair from the ox. People believe that if you got "Hair of Wisdom", you will get a good grade and get smarter.

Jhongsiao’s Activities on Teachers’ Day

In our school, Jhongsiao Junior High School, there are lots of activities on Teacher’s Day every year.
First, the students in grade one make the Teacher’s Day cards to their teachers whom taught them in elementary schools before. Then, these cards are sent to the elementary schools.
Second, the students in grade two make the Teacher Cards for their teachers whom are teaching them now. During this occasion, students give cards to their teacher.
Next, the students in grade three sing songs for their teachers. Because they are going to graduate, they probably want to keep a nice memory.
Last, on Teacher’s Day, our school praises the teachers whom have been teaching for several ten years. Students also give flowers to their teachers to thank them on Teacher’s Day.
